Rust Guide: Where German Classics Corrode

Rust: The Underrated Value Killer

No single factor swings the value of a youngtimer as dramatically as rust. Two cars of the same model, year and mileage can differ in price by a factor of two, purely depending on whether the bodywork is rust-free or not. Summer is the ideal time to buy: dry conditions make underbody inspection far easier, and you have a window to treat any weak spots before the next winter arrives.

This guide shows you where the most popular German classics corrode, how to recognise it, and what rust means for the asking price.

What Rust Does to the Price

A glance at our current market data makes the pattern clear:

ModelAvg. priceTrendWhat the price reveals
Mercedes W210 E-Class€6,291fallingRust-plagued years drag the average down
Mercedes W124 E-Class€13,325risingPre-rust era, holds its value
BMW E30 3 Series€20,998stableRust-free examples in demand
BMW E36 3 Series€10,773fallingCorrosion is thinning the stock
Audi B5 A4€8,617strongly risingSound examples are getting scarce
Audi D2 A8€9,374risingAluminium - barely a rust issue

The most striking comparison is W124 versus W210. Both are Mercedes E-Class sedans, yet the older W124 (avg. €13,325) is now nearly twice as expensive as its successor, the W210 (avg. €6,291). The reason isn’t comfort or technology - it’s the notorious corrosion problem of the late 1990s. Find a genuinely rust-free W210 and you’ll pay well above the average, yet still walk away with a good deal.

Rust Hotspots by Model

BMW

  • E30 3 Series: Jacking points, rear strut towers, wheel arches, and the A-pillars beneath the windscreen. Early cars are more prone than the final model years.
  • E36 3 Series: Rear subframe mounts in the boot floor (safety-critical!), sills, tailgate, and the fuel-filler area.
  • E34 5 Series: Front wings, lower door edges, boot floor. Cheap at avg. €9,712 - but inspect carefully.

Mercedes-Benz

  • W210 E-Class: The problem child. Wings, lower door edges, jacking points, tailgate, strut towers. The culprit was the then-new water-based paint process. Inspect this one without compromise.
  • W124 E-Class: Markedly more solid. Weak points are the wheel arches, jacking points, and the area around the antenna. Rightly considered “indestructible”.
  • W201 190: As robust as the W124; keep an eye on the sills and boot floor.

Audi

  • B5 A4: Rear wheel arches, lower door edges, chassis rails. With a strong upward trend, sound examples are becoming increasingly valuable.
  • C4 A6: Wings, sills, tailgate edge - galvanised bodywork, but no free pass.
  • D2 A8: The exception. Its aluminium Space Frame (ASF) construction practically never rusts. Here you focus on the electronics and suspension instead - a genuine argument for the avg. €9,374.

How to Inspect Properly

  1. Look from underneath: In daylight, on a lift or over a pit. Work through the underbody, sills, axle mounts, and wheel arches systematically.
  2. Magnet test: A magnet won’t stick to areas filled with body filler - a tell-tale sign of hidden repairs.
  3. Bubbles and blisters: Lifting paint at wheel arches and edges almost always means rust pushing through from the inside.
  4. Check the paperwork: Welding work, cavity sealing, and underbody protection should all be documented. A complete history is worth its weight in gold.
  5. Lift the rubber seals: Corrosion often starts unseen beneath the door and tailgate seals.

When a Repair Pays Off - And When It Doesn’t

The rule of thumb: localised surface corrosion can be dealt with. Rot through load-bearing components - axle mounts, strut towers, chassis rails - is expensive and safety-critical. A proper welding repair quickly runs to €1,500-4,000.

On a W210 at €6,291, a comprehensive rust restoration can exceed the value of the car itself. On an E30 at €20,998, the same investment often makes sense. Always weigh repair costs against the market value.

Our Recommendation

  • Buy substance, not specification. A rust-free base-spec youngtimer beats any fully loaded rust bucket.
  • Use rust as leverage. Every documented defect in a load-bearing component justifies a 5-15% discount.
  • Aluminium as an alternative: If you want to sidestep rust entirely, the Audi D2 A8 is a luxury classic that solves the problem by design.
  • Summer is your friend: Buy now, inspect in the dry, and head into the next winter properly protected.

Rust is the one form of damage you can’t simply maintain away. Look closely here and you don’t just buy more safely - you buy more soundly, too.
